It is a small natural bay, tightly enclose between two promontories, situated half way between Santa Margherita Ligure and San Fruttuoso di Camogli, in the Genoa area, on the east side of the region. Although the surrounded hills, characterized by a flourishing vegetation, seemed to be difficult to traverse, you can reach Portofino by car – exit in Rapallo for the highway – or by train stopping in Santa Margherita Ligure – and by ferry as well, from Genoa, Camogli or Santa Margherita Ligure.

The first thing you will notice is the peculiar shape of the bay in which the hamlet is set: it is not the classic half-moon shape, but a narrow inlet in which the sea seem to want to enter by force. Since ancient time it was an important harbour and this maritime tradition has never changed, in fact the touristic port that run along the promontory is still very active.

This long seaside promenade is the heart of the town, the perimeter where the everyday life, tourism and jet set intertwine.
From the harbour you can enjoy the view of the colorful houses, typical of a sea town. It will not be a proper visit if you won’t stop by in one of the many sea view bars: an aperitif, an ice cream to eat sitting or walking on the dock, in the square or in one of the inner streets, always escort by the sound of the waves, these are the best memories you can make in this sea hamlet. It is the perfect break to take in every moment of the day. The sunset is a new beginning: Portofino lights up for the evening, showing off all its appeal. The call is so irresistible that the town comes back to life: there are people enjoying the fish catch during the day and those who cool off with a cocktail with the help of the sea breeze. The nature and the beauty of Portofino, as the siren’s song, appeal many visitors from all over the world. Here in the harbour you can find from the humblest boat to the most luxurious yacht. Businessman, football players, Italian and international actors, even members of the royal families of foreign countries have been bewitched by Portofino. For that it is not so rare to come across celebrities in town. It is normal to catch the sight of a luxurious vessel in the waters along the port. There is also an high probability to encounter a VIP while eating in one fine restaurants or while shopping in one of the many stores, most of which are high fashion boutiques. There are boutiques of handcraft products and clothing, among them the ancient Calzoleria Mingo, an artisan and family activity. It is open from 1936 and at the beginning they produced moccasin that were extremely trendy at the time ( among the historical clients there was the layer Gianni Agnelli), while now sandals and ballerina flat are the fashionable ones. Moreover for cashmere’s lovers there is a dedicated boutique.
